diabetes clinic
The diabetes clinic is run by a team of specialists and nurses. The team provides lifestyle advice, patient empowerment and medication finetuning. We help the patients reach their health targets by giving several structured courses:
1. Lifestyle and tuning oral diabetic medication.
2. Starting and tuning insulin medication.
3. Diabetes during pregnancy
4. Preconceptional care.
5. Continuous care for the brittle diabetes.
These courses usually take 3 months to complete and will consist of several visits to specialist and diabetes nurse. During these visits all aspects of diabetes care will be addressed.
In your first visit the diabetic nurse will check what information is the most urgent. This may vary from the basic information about diabetes and complications, checking your bloodsugar, information about oral medication or insulin, information about foods or carbohydrates, when and where to inject your insulin, information about lifestyle and exercise and many more things.
To get to this point, we need the names of all the medication you use so please bring them! Also bring always your machine to check your blood sugars if you have one.
During the course we will explain all these topics so it is important to come to all your appointments.
The reason for this time intensive approach is that to reach sufficient control as a patient over your diabetes we need to give a lot of information. If all the information is given over a longer time it can take years to reach your goals as a patient.
Of course we will try to implement your diabetes into your life so you can live a normal life. So if you have other solutions, please discuss them during the course. It is important that you agree with the changes you might have to make to control your diabetes because without your cooperation it will not succeed. So together we will try to find a way to control your diabetes.
If you do not have the time to follow this course, please discuss with the diabetes nurse. Also not showing up during this three month course will result in less control and a longer time to reach targets.
So please make a new appointment if you miss one……
