Geriatric consulent
Since January 2016 the Horacio E. Oduber Hospital possesses a geriatric consulent called vacancy. She started her carreer as a geriatric consulent counting the number of patients that were admitted daily in the hospital and determining the risk of delirium (acute confusional state), falling, functional decline (e.g. being able to walk before admission and bedridden after after admission) and malnourishment (and weight loss). More or less 50% of the adult patients admitted in the hospital is older then 65 years. Of those 65+ year old patients high rates of risk exist for developing delirium, falls in the hospital, functional decline and malnourishment.
These high risk patients are detected by the geriatric consulent when she does her rounds through all the wards. Immediately advises are given to patients, family, nurses and medical staff to try to lower the risks as much as possible.
If necessary she will ask for consultation of the internist-geriatrician to do further investigations. Together they form the geriatric team of the hospital.
To request a consultation for a patient admitted in the hospital, please ask the head-treating specialist or ward doctor ('zaalarts') or ask for the geriatric consulent with the nurse.
